A good doctor prescribes medicines whose effects he knows for sure. In the same way, a designer must be guided by principles he understands. It’s one thing to mix colors intuitively, but it’s another to understand the psychological nuances behind it.

Such knowledge helps to clearly convey thought and create a design that one will want to copy. And in a conversation with a client, it’s easier to explain why a design looks this way and not the other way around. Talent is great, but talent dressed in knowledge is better.

Equilibrium
This is the state in a composition when the elements are balanced with each other. To understand balance, imagine that each design element – text box, figure, and image – has a visual weight. Hence the concept of balance: design elements should balance each other and evoke an intuitive sense of completeness in what you see.

Alignment and modular grids
Needed to create an orderly and coherent composition in which elements are aligned with each other.

Color
Colors are a designer’s main friends. Color affects our mood and brings to us an intuitive meaning common to a culture. Color affects us on an unconscious level, so it’s great when a designer knows the psychology of color.

For example, hot colors – red and yellow – have the longest wavelength, which means that their perception requires a significant amount of energy. Such colors increase the pulse rate and breathing, they are associated with active and offensive actions: knowing these nuances, the designer already with the help of color will create the desired association.

Contrast
Contrast directs attention to key design elements. It preserves the differences between similar elements in the design, thereby improving the overall readability of the image. In short, contrast helps the design “catch the eye”.

Hierarchy and scale
Designers tell visual stories in which elements are arranged in order of importance. The most important element has more visual weight: the eye lingers on it first, then glides over less important objects. This ordering of elements is the visual hierarchy. Examples of how to achieve it:

  • use a large or bold font for the headline;
  • place key information above other design elements;
  • emphasize large, bright or centered elements – they weigh more visually than dull and less clear images.

Repetition
Repetition helps to tie individual elements together. It’s a key element of branding, but it’s also used in “one-off” designs. Also, repetition is the basis of patterns and textures.

Think of Coca-Cola or Apple: their logos and color schemes immediately flash in your mind. It’s all about repetition: it creates a consistent brand image and ties the elements together.

Direction
Since design is made for people, it’s important to understand how the “flow” of the user’s attention moves. In what order do his eyes explore the page? How does a person understand where to look next?

Researchers at Nielsen Norman Group have identified some eye movement patterns. Test subjects browsed web pages while scientists recorded the direction of gaze to reveal patterns of content “consumption.” The results, in the form of heat maps, are summarized above.

The research discovered standard patterns of gaze movement: in the form of the letters “F” and “E”. Therefore, maximum attention is concentrated in the top left corner of the page, and it dissipates smoothly as you move downward.

Typography
The right font, like color, sets the emotional tone of the design.

Many fonts were designed for specific purposes, so just learn which ones are used for what.

Negative space
This is the empty space around or between objects. It is an important design element that:

  • gives “breathing room” to the elements of the image,
  • helps to distinguish them,
  • creates hidden images (and the brain loves puzzles!).

The faster the digital industry grows, the more in demand the profession of UI/UX designer becomes. But what does this abbreviation really mean and what is its difference from Web-design?

UX- and UI-design is the design of any user interfaces in which both appearance and usability are important. Interfaces are most commonly understood as mobile applications and websites.

UX stands for User Experience. It is how the user interacts with the product. Whether his goal is achievable (for example, to buy a product in an online store), how easy or difficult it is to do it. A UX designer answers a series of questions: how many steps should a person take to register on the site? And how many to buy a product? And how to show that the transaction was successful?

UI stands for User Interface. It’s everything a person interacts with when using a digital product, from the color of icons to the soundtrack or animation. An interface designer takes care of the appearance of the product and its interactive design.

In simple words, UX differs from UI in that UX is the overall feeling of the experience and UI is how the product looks.

UX is broader and includes UI, so it is not correct to talk about the difference between the two. It’s like asking the question: what is the difference between a cake and the icing on its surface? None. They are incomparable things, the icing is part of the cake. Thus, UX is the process of making the cake, its taste and filling, and UI is the icing on it, its appearance and flavor.

UX and UI have the same task – to make the interaction with the product convenient, pleasant and memorable. That’s why UX and UI are usually closely linked: often both roles are performed by the same specialist. Hence the name of the profession – UX/UI designer.

A good example of design is Google’s home page. It has a simple interface and nothing superfluous: a logo, a search bar and a few buttons. You came for information – and you understand where to enter words, what to click.

History of UX/UI design

In the 1970s, the graphical interfaces used today did not exist. Communicating with a computer required programming skills and took place through a command line interface.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that programmers from Xerox PARC developed GUI, the first graphical user interface. This allowed people to communicate with the computer not through a line of code, but through icons, menus and buttons.

As early as 1984, Apple Computer released the Macintosh, the first commercially successful home computer that had a point-and-click mouse. The personal computer revolution began, and in 1993 Donald Norman, while at Apple, coined the term “User Experience”:

It’s not enough to make a web page and stuff it with information, you need to understand who the target customer is and what their problems can be solved: it became necessary to consider all aspects of the user’s journey through the product.

Thus, a UX- differs from a UI-designer in that the former maps out the journey, while the latter focuses on the visual aspects that make that journey possible.

Web designer is a bit of an archaic concept, dating back to the days when one person was responsible for creating all aspects of a website, but did not think through the details of user interaction with it. As the digital industry has evolved, the concept of a web designer has been replaced by a UX/UI designer.

Roughly generalizing, a web designer now only covers the web sphere and does not deal with applications or any other interfaces.

A web designer creates website layouts (design of lendings, business card sites, design of generic templates) and does not do analytical work as if a UX/UI designer would do it.

The skills of a web designer may include knowledge of layout: such specialists can work on freelancing, taking orders to create websites.

First of all, design trends have touched mobile gadgets. Only last year the frequency of viewing sites using mobile devices surpassed the use of laptops and computers. It makes sense that the design of the adaptive version of the site should match this. Not so long ago, the appearance of the adaptive version of the resource was limited – there were no colorful elements that added weight to the pages, various full-width banners and triggers due to the limited size of displays.

Large white space visually enlarges the screen, does not allow the user to lose concentration. In addition, this color is combined with all other colors, so as accents or design ideas you can choose absolutely any shades. And they will look just fine.

Responsive logos
A fresh trend that will always be relevant from now on. Adaptive logos, which depending on the size of the screen of a mobile device can automatically adjust to it, in one fell swoop can perform two functions at once: the company will keep its brand in front of the target audience regardless of its mobile device and the search engine when analyzing the mobile version of the site will evaluate the behavioral factor, improving the position of the resource in the search engine.

Studio minimalistic photos

Step 1: determine the purpose of the site

Step 6: draw a prototype
