  • Performance: How fast the website loads and responds.
  • Accessibility: Ensuring that the site is usable by people with disabilities.
  • User Journey: Mapping out the user’s path and ensuring a smooth flow.

On the other hand, User Interface (UI) Design is more concerned with the visual elements of a website, including:

  • Layout: How information is structured and organized on the page.
  • Typography: The choice of fonts and text formatting.
  • Colors: The color scheme and the emotional impact it conveys.
  • Graphics: Icons, images, and other visual elements.
  • Interactivity: Buttons, forms, and other elements users interact with.

To delve deeper into the differences between UX/UI design and traditional web design, refer to this informative article on What is UX/UI Design: The Difference from Web Design.

A good doctor prescribes medicines whose effects he knows for sure. In the same way, a designer must be guided by principles he understands. It’s one thing to mix colors intuitively, but it’s another to understand the psychological nuances behind it.

Such knowledge helps to clearly convey thought and create a design that one will want to copy. And in a conversation with a client, it’s easier to explain why a design looks this way and not the other way around. Talent is great, but talent dressed in knowledge is better.

Equilibrium
This is the state in a composition when the elements are balanced with each other. To understand balance, imagine that each design element – text box, figure, and image – has a visual weight. Hence the concept of balance: design elements should balance each other and evoke an intuitive sense of completeness in what you see.

Alignment and modular grids
Needed to create an orderly and coherent composition in which elements are aligned with each other.

Color
Colors are a designer’s main friends. Color affects our mood and brings to us an intuitive meaning common to a culture. Color affects us on an unconscious level, so it’s great when a designer knows the psychology of color.

For example, hot colors – red and yellow – have the longest wavelength, which means that their perception requires a significant amount of energy. Such colors increase the pulse rate and breathing, they are associated with active and offensive actions: knowing these nuances, the designer already with the help of color will create the desired association.

Contrast
Contrast directs attention to key design elements. It preserves the differences between similar elements in the design, thereby improving the overall readability of the image. In short, contrast helps the design “catch the eye”.

Hierarchy and scale
Designers tell visual stories in which elements are arranged in order of importance. The most important element has more visual weight: the eye lingers on it first, then glides over less important objects. This ordering of elements is the visual hierarchy. Examples of how to achieve it:

  • use a large or bold font for the headline;
  • place key information above other design elements;
  • emphasize large, bright or centered elements – they weigh more visually than dull and less clear images.

Repetition
Repetition helps to tie individual elements together. It’s a key element of branding, but it’s also used in “one-off” designs. Also, repetition is the basis of patterns and textures.

Think of Coca-Cola or Apple: their logos and color schemes immediately flash in your mind. It’s all about repetition: it creates a consistent brand image and ties the elements together.

Direction
Since design is made for people, it’s important to understand how the “flow” of the user’s attention moves. In what order do his eyes explore the page? How does a person understand where to look next?

Researchers at Nielsen Norman Group have identified some eye movement patterns. Test subjects browsed web pages while scientists recorded the direction of gaze to reveal patterns of content “consumption.” The results, in the form of heat maps, are summarized above.

The research discovered standard patterns of gaze movement: in the form of the letters “F” and “E”. Therefore, maximum attention is concentrated in the top left corner of the page, and it dissipates smoothly as you move downward.

Typography
The right font, like color, sets the emotional tone of the design.

Many fonts were designed for specific purposes, so just learn which ones are used for what.

Negative space
This is the empty space around or between objects. It is an important design element that:

  • gives “breathing room” to the elements of the image,
  • helps to distinguish them,
  • creates hidden images (and the brain loves puzzles!).

There are certainly more than ten principles of visual design. We hope that the topic has interested you and motivated you to further intellectual pursuits. Or, for example, to attend UX Mind School courses. In all our courses, we go through both practice and theory in detail: no intuitive poking, but working cases and scientifically proven principles of visual design.

The faster the digital industry grows, the more in demand the profession of UI/UX designer becomes. But what does this abbreviation really mean and what is its difference from Web-design?

UX- and UI-design is the design of any user interfaces in which both appearance and usability are important. Interfaces are most commonly understood as mobile applications and websites.

UX stands for User Experience. It is how the user interacts with the product. Whether his goal is achievable (for example, to buy a product in an online store), how easy or difficult it is to do it. A UX designer answers a series of questions: how many steps should a person take to register on the site? And how many to buy a product? And how to show that the transaction was successful?

UI stands for User Interface. It’s everything a person interacts with when using a digital product, from the color of icons to the soundtrack or animation. An interface designer takes care of the appearance of the product and its interactive design.

In simple words, UX differs from UI in that UX is the overall feeling of the experience and UI is how the product looks.

UX is broader and includes UI, so it is not correct to talk about the difference between the two. It’s like asking the question: what is the difference between a cake and the icing on its surface? None. They are incomparable things, the icing is part of the cake. Thus, UX is the process of making the cake, its taste and filling, and UI is the icing on it, its appearance and flavor.

UX and UI have the same task – to make the interaction with the product convenient, pleasant and memorable. That’s why UX and UI are usually closely linked: often both roles are performed by the same specialist. Hence the name of the profession – UX/UI designer.

A good example of design is Google’s home page. It has a simple interface and nothing superfluous: a logo, a search bar and a few buttons. You came for information – and you understand where to enter words, what to click.

History of UX/UI design

In the 1970s, the graphical interfaces used today did not exist. Communicating with a computer required programming skills and took place through a command line interface.

It wasn’t until the 1980s that programmers from Xerox PARC developed GUI, the first graphical user interface. This allowed people to communicate with the computer not through a line of code, but through icons, menus and buttons.

As early as 1984, Apple Computer released the Macintosh, the first commercially successful home computer that had a point-and-click mouse. The personal computer revolution began, and in 1993 Donald Norman, while at Apple, coined the term “User Experience”:

It’s not enough to make a web page and stuff it with information, you need to understand who the target customer is and what their problems can be solved: it became necessary to consider all aspects of the user’s journey through the product.

Thus, a UX- differs from a UI-designer in that the former maps out the journey, while the latter focuses on the visual aspects that make that journey possible.

Web designer is a bit of an archaic concept, dating back to the days when one person was responsible for creating all aspects of a website, but did not think through the details of user interaction with it. As the digital industry has evolved, the concept of a web designer has been replaced by a UX/UI designer.

Roughly generalizing, a web designer now only covers the web sphere and does not deal with applications or any other interfaces.

A web designer creates website layouts (design of lendings, business card sites, design of generic templates) and does not do analytical work as if a UX/UI designer would do it.

The skills of a web designer may include knowledge of layout: such specialists can work on freelancing, taking orders to create websites.

Or they can become UX/UI designers (on our courses we teach UX/UI, details here), which is more in demand nowadays.

On the quality of design depends on the success of the entire site. Therefore, it is very important to follow the trend, to understand what tools have become fashionable in the field of site-building, and which are already considered obsolete and remain behind. By the way, trends in web design are constantly changing, improving, modernizing.

Believe me, if you follow the trend of web design, your target audience will appreciate it, converting from a visitor to a regular customer.

First of all, design trends have touched mobile gadgets. Only last year the frequency of viewing sites using mobile devices surpassed the use of laptops and computers. It makes sense that the design of the adaptive version of the site should match this. Not so long ago, the appearance of the adaptive version of the resource was limited – there were no colorful elements that added weight to the pages, various full-width banners and triggers due to the limited size of displays.

Storytelling
The concept of storytelling came to us from the west and has firmly established itself in one of the content directions. Today it is very common to see storytelling in social networks, which persuade the reader to buy some product or service, referring to the story of how it helped the author. But a few years ago, the principle of storytelling gained a foothold in web design, showing great results.

More space
The trend for more white space is relatively recent – in 2016-2017. However, it has reliably settled in web design due to its ability to focus attention on the main offer.

Large white space visually enlarges the screen, does not allow the user to lose concentration. In addition, this color is combined with all other colors, so as accents or design ideas you can choose absolutely any shades. And they will look just fine.

Responsive logos
A fresh trend that will always be relevant from now on. Adaptive logos, which depending on the size of the screen of a mobile device can automatically adjust to it, in one fell swoop can perform two functions at once: the company will keep its brand in front of the target audience regardless of its mobile device and the search engine when analyzing the mobile version of the site will evaluate the behavioral factor, improving the position of the resource in the search engine.

Studio minimalistic photos
Try to replace the bright and multi-element photos on your website with high-quality photos that show only one element that reflects the idea and concept of the company. This will focus the visitor’s attention and will not allow him to get distracted.

Screaming colors
No one can and will never be able to prohibit you from using bright colors in the design of your site, if they emphasize the overall idea. Colors convey emotions, and emotions – the most important thing for the user. At the sight of juicy and screaming colors, properly matched, your target audience will appreciate your boldness, staying on the site and continuing to use it.

Non-standard arrangement of blocks
The classic way of arranging blocks is already considered obsolete. No, it does not lose its effectiveness, but thanks to new methods of presenting information you can significantly increase it. Try to structure information according to the method of a broken grid, chaotically placing blocks across the page. This solution creates a new spin in terms of aesthetics – it fuels the user’s interest and allows you to not go beyond the corporate identity of even a narrowly focused company.

Full-screen video
Although infocontent allows you to maximize the exposure of the company, its competitive advantages and services, full-screen videos can handle it just as well. First, background videos make the site design unusual, modern, which increases visitor engagement and leads the project to greater effectiveness. Secondly, videos can become not the worst story about the company. At the same time, the user does not need to scroll down the page to find the information they are interested in.

Geometric shapes and patterns
This trend is relatively fresh. It originated in 2016, developed in the 17th and will continue to gain popularity. Mixing different geometric shapes can yield great results. Choosing the right patterns and shapes can help create a cohesive and attractive composition that is highly appreciated by web users. And, despite the fact that 2D technology is gradually losing its position, giving way to 3D, such techniques can significantly refresh the concept of design, making it modern and very interesting.

Significance of visual context in web design https://boldperspective.com/significance-of-visual-context-in-web-design/ Mon, 24 Oct 2022 13:55:00 +0000 https://boldperspective.com/?p=72 Visual context has to do with presenting content in a way that better communicates the main idea of the site.

The post Significance of visual context in web design appeared first on Spect Per-Boldtive.

]]>
Visual context has to do with presenting content in a way that better communicates the main idea of the site.

For example, an architect’s website may have a portfolio of successful projects. The user will decide for himself whether he needs this section or not. The visual context from the beginning (images, colors, indents) will give the user an understanding of the architect’s design knowledge, construction experience, and administrative expertise.

Let’s look at another example with an aerospace company. A bold picture of an airplane and machinery immediately gives an understanding of this company’s position in the aerospace industry. The user doesn’t even need to read the text on the banner.

How do you create visual context?

Creating visual context depends on understanding your users, the perspective of users shifting with age, gender and ethnicity. For example, images with the color white can evoke happiness in some people and sadness in others. Therefore, to create the perfect visual context on your business website, you need to assess the understanding of your audience, what your users can help you with.

A few valuable ingredients in creating visual context:

  • images with the type of business;
  • infographics that gather the main text in a readable way;
  • arrows, lines, patterns, highlighting numbers and showing direction;
  • a selection of words and phrases that enrich the visual context;
  • stories told through creative graphics;
  • eye-catching icons that help with menus.

How important is visual context?

Let’s look at a few reasons why visual context is important:

First Impression
We said above that users need fractions of a second to form an opinion about your site. A more complete opinion is formed in the next few seconds. Brand, images and icons should create a good first impression in a short period of time. To make users stay on the site longer, make sure the visual context gives an informative picture of what your site is about and what it is for.

It helps with the delivery of information
The visual component of a website is “sensually” more appealing than textual content. A user is more likely to pay attention to a few more images that confirm the overall context, rather than phrases and paragraphs of text. No matter how well you convey the story, the first emotional response from the user is heavily influenced by images, which helps in conveying information.

Users are much better at understanding visual context
Visual context brings the story to life, it helps the user understand your business and your operations. He or she will understand the basic idea of your business from the context and start looking for options, products and services.

If you’re chasing an innovative interface that defies convention, visual context can help bridge the gap between users and your product.

Emotional connection matters
Visual context evokes emotions in your target audience. Let’s break down the example of Lend With Care, a microfinance organization. Count the number of faces on the homepage. This instantly conveys context and connects the user. Warm and soft colors make the site more appealing, smiles convey positivity and a sense of community.

Within seconds, visitors create an emotional connection with a website.
The same is applicable to merchandise. Customers can form a form of connection with different products. You, as a designer, should create an image that will evoke inner feelings in the target audience.

Visual context helps users, especially those who are on your website for the first time. It interprets characteristics and values from the site. As a designer, you can use all of the above to create important context (images, colors, visual data, infographics, videos, animations, icons, directions, and other visual tools).

In Figma you can create website prototypes, vector illustrations, buttons, strips and other interface elements. We tell you how to use Figma, the advantages and disadvantages of the service and who it is suitable for.

What is Figma

“Figma” is an online service for web design. In it you can draw illustrations and interface elements, create an interactive website layout, application prototype or vector graphics.

In the past, it was difficult for a team of designers to work on one project at the same time, to show finished variants to clients and to give mockups to developers. To open a mockup, you had to download, install and configure separate programs like Adobe Photoshop.

Work in Figma is based on a different principle. All you need to access the service is the Internet and a browser. All edits can be made simultaneously in one layout by setting up shared access.

Figma capabilities

The service allows you to solve a large number of design tasks. Let’s tell you about the main projects that can be done in Figma.

Prototyping
In Figma you can draw a model of a website or application. Such prototypes designers usually demonstrate to customers to show how the project will look like in the future. In the service you can not only draw the necessary screens, but also customize the links between them.

Drawing interface elements
In Figma, designers can create icons, bars, buttons, feedback forms, etc. The program also allows you to customize the effects on each element: make buttons clickable, expand lists, hide bars, create animations for blocks and pop-ups.

Working with vector objects
In Figma you can create vector graphics, import vector objects from Adobe Illustrator and Sketch editors, and export your design in svg format.

Creating flowcharts
In Figma you can quickly create charts, graphs and diagrams. Thanks to the service’s built-in online flowchart builder and a large library of components, you can simply drag and drop elements onto the canvas and create your flowchart in minutes. The finished version can be exported in png, svg or other convenient format, and Figma also has integrations with project and document management programs: Asana and Dropbox Paper.

Figma’s main tools

Figma has a lot of tools for working on projects, let’s tell you about the main ones.

A frame is the main design element in Figma. It is a workspace that can be a website page or an application screen. Frames scale well, you can set the frame size yourself or choose a ready-made size designed for popular devices and formats.

Modular grid
Grids are lines and cells that allow you to align and organize all design objects in a frame. Grids are created through the Grid Layout panel. In the service you can change the grid color, stretch it or adjust its size, and you can use an unlimited number of grids in one layout.

Components
Components are user interface objects that can be given common styles and can be quickly changed if necessary. Let’s say you have created a layout of 30 pages, and the customer asked you to change the font in the headings, so you can use components and change the font in only one heading, the rest will be changed automatically.

Vector forms
There are basic vector objects in the online service: rectangle, line, triangle, arrow, circle and star. They allow you to draw buttons, bars and other interface elements. You can create vector objects with the Shape Tool.

Images
You can add any image to the layout and start working with it. To do this, open the File panel and use the Place Image tool or just drag and drop the necessary images from the desktop.

Version History
All changes made to a document are automatically saved in the cloud. With shared access, you can track the history of each employee’s actions, view and restore previous versions of a document. You can also assign names to all versions.

Website design is not always about successful color combinations and creative solutions. The site must fulfill its main function – to attract users and customers, as well as contain useful information for them. There are many nuances and newcomer to web development can be difficult to determine exactly where to start working on the layout, what elements and for what should be on the site. To help everyone who wants to put together a website layout on their own, we have written instructions on how to make a website design and bring the project to the customer.

Step 1: determine the purpose of the site
From the purpose depends on the type of site and its content. Websites come in commercial and non-commercial.

Non-commercial sites. The main purpose of non-commercial sites is to deliver useful information to the audience or to draw attention to some topic. These are news sites, blogs, sites of charitable and public organizations.

Commercial sites. The purpose of commercial sites – to attract customers and sell goods. Commercial sites include lendings, online stores and trading company sites.

Step 2: Determine what elements are needed on the site
When you have determined the purpose and the type of website that can solve the client’s problem, make a list of the necessary elements of the site. Depending on the type of site, these will vary.

Step 3: Analyze your competitors
Study competitors’ sites – this will help you find interesting design ideas or realize what you forgot on your site. If it’s a regional business, study competitors from the customer’s region. If the company operates nationwide, pay attention to the sites of market leaders. Even if you have already decided on the type of site and the content that should be there, you can learn a lot of other information from competitors. Perhaps your opinion will change.

Step 4: Find successful references
References are examples that you can look to when creating a website. It can be not only the sites of competitors and market leaders. Look for similar online resources abroad. Find out from the client what kind of sites he likes, ask if his company has a design or if you can create a new one. Perhaps there are some colors, fonts, content that are forbidden or, on the contrary, desirable.

Step 5: choose the tools for the job
Use Figma, Tilda or Sketch to design your layout.

Sketch and figma are almost the same in terms of functions. But Sketch is suitable only for macbooks, and in Figma you can work from any device and even in a browser. Tilda is suitable if you need to make a simple site or a lending, a large online store to run there is difficult. In addition, files from sketch can be imported into figma, and from figma – into tilde

Step 6: draw a prototype
A prototype is a mockup that helps show the layout of elements on a website page and its future functionality. Elements of the page in the prototype is convenient to mark up rectangles and sign them – what it is, what role they play.

When creating a prototype focus on the layout of elements, not on the beauty – it is created in the next step. Focus on the type of site – what elements it should contain, as well as references and competitor sites. Layout does not necessarily have to be perfect – it is more of a scheme that can be supplemented and modified

Step 7: work out the structure
Now you can work out the exact structure that you can design with color.

Create a blank canvas on which to place the elements from the layout. Work in black and white at first to focus on shapes rather than color. Transfer the elements from the layout to the site, adjust the sizes, move them to the right places. Align them. There should definitely be free space between the elements to make it easier to perceive. Work this way every page of the site.

Step 8: add colors and fonts
When most of the site is already created, it seems that the little things are left: choosing colors and fonts. As if not: these are the first things a user pays attention to. And if you have colors that are too bright or fonts that are uncomfortable to read, the user will leave the site.

Step 9: Post content
Add content: articles, videos, products, images, advertising banners. It can be supplemented and updated in the future.

If you post articles, add videos, photos, so that the information is presented visually. In this case, do not insert pictures that do not relate to the text, they will only distract attention. Sign pictures and videos so that the reader does not have to guess what is drawn there. Also, media should be in good quality so that no pixels are visible.
